The Tulsa Local News Initiative seeks a web producer to help deliver news to all Tulsans across a variety of digital platforms, including website, social media and newsletters, in ways that ensure residents can trust our news organization as a primary source of local news and information.

The web producer will work with local editors to manage editorial calendars, join story meetings and help brainstorm the best way to package and distribute assigned stories to their intended audiences. The web producer will contribute to efforts identifying republishable stories from partners that would be of interest to the Tulsa Local News Initiative’s audiences, and either directly republish them or develop summary content that makes them more accessible to our audiences. The web producer may also sometimes take dispatches from reporters in the field and develop spot news stories from the reporting that needs to be posted quickly.

The web producer will also manage the initiative’s publishing tools, including for its website, newsletters, and social media scheduling, ensuring that the newsroom is utilizing best digital audience practices, and that content is published up to standard and on time. They will work with newsroom and audience leadership to develop sustainable and efficient editorial processes, including everything from ideation to publishing and recirculation.

About the organization:

The Tulsa Local News Initiative is a yet-to-be named startup nonprofit organization that has raised nearly $14 million so far in service of a vision to give everyone in Tulsa the local news they need. The newsroom will produce high-quality accountability journalism while working directly with residents to produce and distribute community reporting, employing an innovative model for local journalism that is directly responsive to local information needs. In addition to a team of editors and beat reporters, the Tulsa newsroom will have best-in-class community engagement expertise, multimedia production, dedicated capacity for service journalism and research, and Tulsa Documenters.

Essential Functions:
  • Work with newsroom leadership to hone editorial processes
  • Attend and contribute to editorial meetings and provide local input and expertise as needed
  • Stage and prepare articles for publishing, including reviewing and improving headlines, and ensuring each story has compelling art
  • Build and schedule newsletters, and pre-planned social media content
  • Take dispatches from reporters in the field and craft quick-turnaround article briefs
  • Check on partner content regularly and pitch stories that we should be republishing or pursuing for local follow-ups
  • Build relationships with editors at partner newsrooms to keep an open line about content sharing on the fly

  • Experience with community-centered journalism and engagement practices
  • Experience with WordPress
  • 1 - 2 years or significant internship experience in the news industry
  • Skills in design, typography and basic photo-editing
  • Basic proficiency with HTML and CSS
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or a desire to learn recommended
  • Precise attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Strong news judgment and understanding of journalistic ethics
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a startup environment
  • Comfort with digital tools for newsgathering, production, and audience engagement
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends as news demands
  • Multilingual skills valued, particularly Spanish
  • Knowledge of Tulsa communities and local issues preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to local, public service journalism
Compensation and Benefits

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary range for this role is $50,000-60,000 with a generous benefits package.
